Experience

I have been blessed over the years to have had some great teachers, from Mrs. Morrow in kindergarten to Dr. Willis in grad school. But I believe that my best teacher, by far, is Experience.

Experience is the most persistent of teachers, always providing opportunities to learn and advance my understanding. S/He lets me know there are things I can do and must do. S/He has shown me that there are things that I cannot do and need to depend on others. Experience teaches me dangerous things to avoid, as well as beautiful things to pursue and embrace.

Experience has helped me get jobs and taken me to exotic places. S/He has given me confidence that I could accomplish and achieve. S/He has brought me disappointment when I did not reach a goal, but also brought great satisfaction when a job has been done.

Experience has introduced to a vast number of people. S/He has brought me into contact with people that are the greatest joy in life, and taught me to love them. Experience also has taught me that there are some folks with whom I will have no positive interaction. Experience has taught me how to endure them, at times even honor them.

Experience has helped me realize a lot about life and how to handle the ups and downs. Through Experience, I know that when I am having a mountaintop moment, it will not be long till I have to go back down into the valley to continue my journey.

And when life has dealt me a severe blow, Experience reminds me that it is another hurdle to be overcome, but that the sun is still shining behind the clouds.

Christian Fiction Shop!

Reading is one of the favorite activities of our family, for everyone from 3 to 83. We read a lot of non-fiction, but we all love a good story. We enjoy murder mysteries, and western novels, and fantasies, almost any story will suit us.

For perhaps the past twenty or twenty five years we have read a lot of biblical/historical fiction. These works are centered on events recorded in Scripture, but building stories about the characters of those events. There are some really compelling works in this genre.

A year or so ago my wife and middle daughter decided to create a website that would promote Christian fiction. The site is Christianfictionshop.com. Among the features on the site are reviews of quite an assortment of Christian works of fiction. This allows readers to get an idea of whether or not to pick up a copy of a particular work.

Love My New Job!!!

When I decided to talk to my boss about working from home I was terrified – what if he said no? I just needed some more flexibility with my hours, though, and with the kids now in school I just wasn’t willing to have them come home to an empty house every afternoon. Anyway, the talk went about a thousand times better than I thought it would and Jim was really supportive. I’ve actually been able to transfer my duties to the house pretty seamlessly and all we really had to do to get my office ready was get Direct TV And Internet. My husband loves that I’m now at home and can wait on packages and run to the grocery store and I really like being able to welcome my kids off the bus with open arms. I know what it’s like being a latch key kid and I knew it wasn’t something I wanted for my family so I’m glad I took the necessary steps to work towards a life without that!

Family Celebrations

St. Patrick's Day is a big deal in my family. We are full-blooded Irish, so we always get the whole crew together to have some kind of massive celebration. My mom thinks it's hilarious to die everything green, so from the milk at breakfast, to the beer at lunch, to the macaroni and cheese at dinner, every single item we eat is green. It's kind of gross. Ever since I got Clearwirelessinternet for my parents, they have been e-mailing me nonstop about the events like they think I'm the event planner or something. I don't know why they assume I would have access to 100 po! unds of green confetti, but sure enough, they're asking me for it! I can't wait for all my rowdy relatives to get to my parents' house so we can throw down like we do every St. Patty's day. My uncle Louie, in particular, really lives it up on this holiday, so let's just hope it's not quite a repeat of the horror show that was last year's St. patties!

I have begun a new blog that I am calling Old Timer. I will be writing mostly about baseball and other sports, with perhaps a few thoughts about various forms of recreation and entertainment. NEW BOOK CLUB FORMING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A good friend of mine has decided to put together a
Book Club gathering of bloggers each month. She will post a book for any one who is interested in participating to read by the 25th of the month. Then each participant will post his or her report on the book on their own blog, with a link to the book club site. My friend will include links back to the various posts so that the participants can peruse the other posted reports.

The book to be read for the month of April is To Kill A Mockingbird. I have not read it since high school, so I will pick up a copy at the library and give it a reread.

The whole idea sounds like fun to me, and of course, the more the merrier!

I have daily home delivery of the Houston Chronicle. Except on Sunday, I like to start my day with the paper, but I usually only read the sports page and the funny papers. One of the comics I check every day is Mother Goose and Grimm. It often has a new twist on old thoughts or phrases. I often laugh. Today was one of those. I thought you might enjoy the laugh and start reading the funnies, if you are not in the habit.

The Real Rank is intended, at least in part, to help establish value for advertisers using PPP to promote their products. Google has decided that any blog posting links to an advertiser somehow diminishes their strength, so they removed all page ranks from such blogs. It has resulted, at least for the blogs I had that were very productive now receiving almost no offers. I am trying to get the Izea Rankings to work for me, so I can do more work for them. I am anxious to get back on a better footing with the advertisers.

My hair is long gone, so my wife was the one to use the samples of naked naturals shampoo and conditioner we received in the mail. It was a welcome product for my bride because her hair is very fine, and as she is aging, she feels the need to use products that will strengthen it. She read the claims that the the ingredients in the products have been clinically proven to make hair up to seven times stronger by working inside out. It is the only shampoo that makes such a claim.

So she gladly experimented with the samples, which contain Citrus and Keravis, but no harsh chemicals. The key to the benefits of Naked Naturals is the Keravis, a plant protein. My wife has long been a proponent of natural shampoo and other products that use nature's own ingredients. It just makes sense to her functionally and ecologically.

CARNIVAL VICTORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My wife and I took our seven and eight year old grandsons on a seven day cruise of the Eastern Caribbean on the Carnival Victory. We sailed out of Miami, making ports of call in San Juan, Puerto Rico, St. Thomas, and St. Maarten. We had a very comfortable balcony suite that slept four on the Upper Deck level. We had late seating in the Pacific dining room, and had wonderful waiters; Clarence from St. Vincent and Adrian from Indonesia. They were especially kind to the boys.

The food was good and there was lots to do on the boat when we were at sea, includnig Camp Carnival sessions for the kids at no extra charge. The boys most enjoyed the 80 foot water slide!

Dragon Speak!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My computer has been down for the last few days, and when I got problems figured out, at least most of them, I could not launch my voice recognition software. I went to nuance.com, who produces the software called Dragon Speak. I found out if there is a problem between Windows XP and Dragon Speak. The fix was very quick and now I am testing the software and it seems to be working fine again.

CHEAPERTHANHOTELS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My travels around the world have not yet taken me to England. But ti is one of the places I would love to visit, to take my wife for a holiday. We would like to see the the major attractions, like Buckingham Palace and Westminster Abbey, and the Tower Bridge. But while making one of the London hotels our base, we would also like to attend the theater and catch some of the local music.

But if my wife has her way, we will not simply stay in one lace but move around to perhaps a selection from Oxford Street hotels, Kensington hotels, or Knightsbridge hotels. Maybe one of each. The reason is she wants to take full advantage of the shopping districts. She wants to come home with a shopping bag from an exclusive shop on Oxford Street, but she also wants to do some serious shopping in the more relaxed environment of Knightsbridge and Kensington.

PILGRIM'S PRIDE Chicken!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I recently accepted an opportunity to post a blog with a link to a Chicken Restaurant chain. I had to come up with an alternative way to cook chicken. I went by the store and picked up some boneless, skinless chicken tenderloins for my props.

I did not use the method of cooking I suggested in my You Tube Movie, but grilled it instead. It was very good, better than the Tyson brand we normally use. And it was cheaper too! Funny how things work out.

I just took my grandsons, 7 & 8, to see the movie The Waterhorse. It is a true tale of the Loch Ness monster as told by an eyewitness to the events around the creature during the second World War. It is a fun story and has little that would discourage even the most protective parent from taking the kids to see. The boys were delighted and I enjoyed the afternoon contemplating monsters and magic!

Santa got rave reviews at our house for his work on Christmas Eve. Our six and eight year olds that live with us full time were excited with the number, the selection and the quality of their gifts. The younger was very satisfied with the 20 inch bicycle and his big boy Bible. The older loved his roller blades and his video game. And both loved their LOUD toys, a Warplane for the younger and a Tank for the older.

SWEENEY TODD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Johnny Depp has had so many good roles in the movies that it is hard to select just one or two as his best. He is capable of playing comedy roles, and dramatic roles, and is especially good at sinister roles. Choosing my favorite of his movies is really not so hard, I suppose. I believe the best movie he has done was Finding Neverland, which came out in 2004.

In that movie Depp portrayed a playwright, J. M. Barrie, who produced the timeless children’s classic Peter Pan. Maybe my love for Finding Neverland is based on the fact that one of the first movies I ever saw, nearly 60 years ago, was the animated Peter Pan from Walt Disney. I still love to watch it with my grandsons But in Finding Neverland, I was especially moved by the scenes of Depp playing with and developing the imaginations of the Davies boys, with whom he had fallen in love, as well as with their widowed mother. He taught the boys how to believe, and through the tragedy that beset his beloved, Barrie also learned to believe.

While I did not particularly enjoy the character of Jack Sparrow, I thoroughly enjoyed Pirates of the Caribbean II, because it was set in my favorite place in the world, the island of Dominica. So I loved watching Sparrow run across beaches being chased by natives upon which I have bathed, and run across coconut groves through which I have walked. It made the movie really alive for me.

Depp's new movie, Sweeney Todd, is coming out this week. From the trailer that I have seen, it appears that Depp is going to play another somewhat sinister character who is out for revenge over the injustices done him and his loved ones. My wife’s mother has been in deteriorating health for about five years, but in recent weeks she has had to be in the hospital several times and her strength is waning. She has been living alone and does not want to give up her independence with her 80th birthday just over a month away. ButterFinger Crunchers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I recently was in a local dollar store, where I saw what I thought was a package of eight miniature Butter Finger candy bars for a dollar. But I did not read carefully enough, they were a new product, Butter Finger Crunchers. Here is one vote to leave well enough alone. These taste like the Nutty Buddy bars produced by Little Debbie. They are all right, but they do not get close to as good as Butter Finger.

I live in an area where there are a large number of Vietnamese residents. The parents it these families came to America as refugees who spoke little or no English. Their children are bright, but lack the skills to really succeed in school. Reading Tutors, like those at Score Learning Centers have been of invaluable service to these youngsters who only need a chance to shine.

A friend of mine has just begun a new blog called Life's Little Commentary. The blogger is a young father so there will probably be observations about raising kids. THE MIST by Stephen King!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tomorrow will see the arrival of The Mist by Stephen King in movie theaters across the country. I just watched the trailer online and it looks to be a chiller. The premise has to do with sinister mist that envelops a community and drives a large portion of the population into one location. As the mysterious activities begin to unfold, so do the personalities of each of the characters in the movie.

I hope that I am never put face to face with a phenomenon that is inexplicable, especially in the company of a lot of people I do not know. I have not had any similar experiences to those in the film, where sheer terror prevails. When I was a young boy visiting my grandparents and other relatives in northeastern Arkansas, it was not uncommon for the family to be awakened in the night and hurried to the storm cellar because of the threat of a tornado, something like the scene in the Wizard of Oz. My uncle would stand in the door of the cellar and scan the sky, obviously concerned. His mother had been killed in a tornado. But I did not understand his anxiety at the time.

But on my thirty fifth birthday, I may have gotten a taste of his fear. We had boarded up our house against the approaching Hurricane Alicia. We decided not to evacuate, despite the fact that we were only about 11 miles from Galveston Bay. We thought the storm would make a turn and go away from us. So my brother and sister in law and their five children came to our home to get away from their mobile home. That made twelve of us in the house.

The storm did not veer and came directly over us. For hours the winds blew and rain fell. Our lights went out around ten o'clock that night. When the winds began to make the house tremble, I stood looking out at the night through a small opening in the boarding. I thought back to my uncle. My brothers wife got a bit loud in her expressions of concern, until I asked her not to scare the kids.

When the eye passed over the house, there was a frightening stillness for about half an hour, but nothing as dramatic as The Mist . I am glad that is just a movie.

SmithHeart's Restaurant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This morning I was at a meeting in Angleton, Texas. When the meeting was breaking up, a group of us went together to a local restaurant called SmithHeart's. It has a nice menu at an affordable price and we received very cordial service. I chose a steak finger basket and was very pleased with the meal. The meat was real round steak, and the gravy was thick and creamy. I will try them again.

Bikes For the Beach!!!!!!!!!!!!!

One of my co-workers is a beach bum at heart. He lives only a few minutes from the Gulf of Mexico and he hangs out at the surf side as many hours a day as he can. New Bicycle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My grandson just rode a bicycle without training wheels for the first time. He was so proud of himself. He only fell acouple of times as he was learning to navigate turn around in the street. Do you have a favorite place to eat Mexican food? Ours a little family restaurant called Celaya. When we found it, it was only five or six minutes from our house. The owners are very friendly and their food they serve is better than any Mexican food we have ever tried, and we have tried a lot of it.
My favorite is a shrimp quesadilla.

About a year and a half ago they decided not to pay the proposed increase in rent when their lease expired. They chose to move to a new location, two towns away from us. We don’t go as often now as we did when they were around the corner, but when we really want good Mexican food we drive the half hour to get to Celaya. We just got back from a trip over there. I am full and satisfied!

Have two of our grandsons living with us at this time, they are age 6 and 7. We are planning to take them to Disney World, hopefully in the next calendar year. We have begun saving our money in what we are calling our Orlando Escape fund.

Have you ever seen the movie, ”Shadowlands”? It stars Anthony Hopkins, who is one of the best actors of his era, in my opinion. He portrays the renowned teacher and writer, C. S. Lewis. I have become a sentimental old fool over the years, and I shed tears in movies all the time. But in this one, I was to the point of sobbing. I could relate to the depth of love and the struggle this man of faith was going through after having spoken so many times on how to deal with such loss.

If you have not seen the movie, I recommend you rent it and watch it with someone you love deeply. It was nominated as Best Picture in 1993, so it is well done. And it might even stimulate discussion about some things loved ones should talk about, but too often do not!

Kathrine Grant (Mrs Bing Crosby) grew up in the county where I was raised. When I was in grade school she came to our school to promote her new film, "The Seventh Voyage Of Sinbad". She told us about how they made her look only a few inches high; after a wizard had shrunk her as a curse. We learned how they made the Cyclopses move and how the Dragon was animated. We were fascinated by her talk, but the movie was a tremendous adventure for a little boy's imagination.

I have told the story of the voyage to my grandsons for years, as well as how I met one of the stars. Recently I bought a copy of the video tape and shared it with my 5 & 6 years grandsons. It is still a tremendous adventure for little boys, even though the special effects are no match for Star Wars or the Chronicles of Narnia.

Little boys, (and little girls), learn a great deal by listening to stories, I hope you will take the time to tell the stories and teach the lessons.

Louis L’Amour Novels!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I love Louis L'Amour novels, for lots of reasons. The first one I encountered was in the early 70's when I was working a graveyard shift as an operator in a chemical plant. I was struggling to stay awake, so my co-worker handed me a copy of The Daybreakers. It was easy reading, the story was good, and I loved the Sackett family.

At the time I had no idea that L'amour was such a prolific writer or that I had already embraced some of his works as among my all time favorite movies. He wrote How the West Was Won, which is still in my top ten list of favorite movies. And Hondo is one of the best ever John Wayne movies, also written by L'Amour.

I began pickeing up paperbacks and letting Louis lead me on adventures into the deserts, or moutains or into the fens of England. He also wrote stories of adventures in the South China Sea and other more modern settings. He was so descriptive of the environments that I could get thirsty or cold along with his characters. He did a lot of research of the places he wrote about, and wove the truth of the settings beautifully into the story line.

Another thing I really appreciate about L'Amour was that he entertained with the story and the landscapes, rather than with vulgarity or profanity. I eventually signed up for the Louis L'Amour collection from Bantam and received all 120 volumes in hardcover leatherette bindings. They take up 3 shelves on a big bookcase and are written into my will as I consider them among my treasures to be handed down to my daughter.

If you want a good clean story, pick up a Louis L'Amour novel!
