That stands for Leeward Islands Air Transport, an airline that has a relative monopoly to many of the smaller Caribbean islands. The locals have other ways to use the acronym. They call LIAT "Luggage In Another Town" or Leave Island Any Time".
Our group of seventeen that recently went to Dominica, flew LIAT from San Juan to the Melville Hall airport. We had checked 18 bags in total. Guess how many of them arrived.
